DIY Fixes & Advice

Car Key
Troubleshooting

Try these expert tips before calling out a technician. You might save yourself a service fee!

1. My Remote Key Fob Stopped Working

This is the most common issue we see in SE2 and across London. Try these steps:

  1. Check the Battery: 90% of fob failures are due to a dead CR2032 or CR2025 coin battery. These are available at most local supermarkets.
  2. The Spare Test: If your spare key works, the issue is definitely the first key. If neither works, your car battery might be flat.
  3. Signal Interference: Ensure you aren’t parked near a radio mast or high-voltage power lines, which can block the signal.

2. The Key Won’t Turn in the Ignition

Don’t force it! You could snap the blade. Try this instead:

  1. Wiggle the Steering Wheel: The steering lock might be under tension. Pull the wheel hard left or right while gently trying to turn the key.
  2. Check Gear Position: If you drive an automatic, ensure the lever is fully clicked into ‘P’ (Park).
  3. Clean the Blade: Use a dry cloth to wipe away any lint or grit from the key’s grooves. Do not use oil or WD40 in the lock itself.

Still Stuck?

If these guides didn’t solve the problem, you may have a transponder failure or a seized barrel.
